Kids Pom Pom Crafts

Pom Pom Bracelet

I was recently introduced to pom beadz which are great for making crafts. Pom Beadz are pom poms with a plastic tube inserted in the middle. This enables the pom poms to be easily threaded, similarly to wooden or ceramic beads on wire or elastic cord. You can also use chenille stems (also known as pipe cleaners) without the need for glue or adhesives.

They are excellent for school and party projects and are an excellent tool for children to develop their fine motor skills, as they thread them through the hole. Please be aware that the plastic tubes are small enough for a small child to choke on which is why I recommend an age range of 5-8 years.

Make Your Own Bee Using Pom PomsPom Pom Bee

Here's a bee that you can make very easily using pom beadz. You'll need several sizes as outlined below and a pipe cleaner.

Here's what you will need and the instructions.

What you will need

  • 2 x 1 1/2" (38 mm) Pom Beadz (I have used Pom Beadz which are multi-coloured with both yellow and black but you may find it easier to use one yellow and one black).
  • 1 x 3/4" (19mm) Pom Beadz.
  • 1 x pipe cleaner (chenille stick).
  • Plastic eyes and glue - optional.

How to make it

  1. Cut the chenille stick in half.
  2. Thread all of the Pom Beadz through one of the chenille stick halves and secure it by twisting the end and remove any excess length.
  3. Using the other chenille stick half, make a figure of '8' for the wings as shown in the photograph.
  4. With the extra length at the end of the '8' insert it between the two large size Pom Beadz and twist it around to secure.
  5. If you wish, you can glue plastic eyes in place.
